2019 Projects in Review

Happy New Year everyone – as we roll into the new decade, we thought we’d look back on some of the cool projects we worked on last year. XCG’s depth of expertise in solid waste management, brownfields, and site investigations is also matched by the generosity and compassion our team shares with the communities we serve. Here’s to a great 2020 ahead!

XCG Knows... Solid Waste Management

While many were enjoying their summer holidays, XCG was busy preparing various Design, Operations and Closure Plans for our western Canadian clients to meet the current (2016) British Columbia Ministry of Environment (MOE) Landfill Criteria for Municipal Solid Waste. These plans are required to be reviewed and updated at least once every five years to demonstrate that the facility is planned, designed, constructed, operated, monitored, and eventually closed in accordance with the Landfill Criteria.

In our June 2019 electronic bulletin, we highlighted three recent solid waste management projects:

Revelstoke Landfill, B.C.

Greater Vernon Recycling and Disposal Facility, B.C.

Sechelt Landfill, B.C.

XCG Knows... Brownfield Funding Applications

Over the last thirty years, XCG has conducted hundreds of environmental due diligence and remedial projects across Ontario. After the release of the amended Ontario Regulation 153/04 (i.e. the Brownfield Regulations) and the Ontario Brownfields Statutory Law Amendment Act in 2011, municipalities across the province began developing various Brownfield Incentive Grant Programs to encourage developers to clean up their impacted sites and revitalize core development areas of their municipalities. Since then, XCG has assisted numerous clients find available municipal incentive programs and then helped them navigate the application process and prepare needed documentation.

Here are a few incentive programs that we can help prospective developers with:

Phase Two Environmental Site Assessment (ESA) or initial Study Grants - Grants equivalent of partially covering the

cost of a Phase Two ESA, designated substances and hazardous materials survey, remedial work plan, or risk assessment.

• Tax Incentive Grants – Relief from paying municipal property taxes and education taxes for set amount of years to offset the site investigation/remediation costs and LEED costs using a grant equivalent to partially cover the municipal property tax increase created by the project for a set amount of years.

• Regional Development Charge Exemptions – Financial assistance to cover the direct costs of remediating brownfield sites.

In our April 2019 electronic bulletin, we highlighted four recent Brownfield Funding Application projects:

Metalworks - Arthur Street, Guelph, On

Centre Suite on Third, Owen Sound, On

Princess Street, Kingston, On

York Street, London, On

XCG Knows… Multi-Site Due Diligence Investigations

Conducting investigations on multiple properties within a client portfolio requires excellent project management skills, consideration of the various jurisdictional requirements and location differences as well as the consistent application of science and methodology on each. Coordinating multi-site investigations with expert insights and reporting all within specific timelines and budgets is an XCG strength. In our July 2019 electronic bulletin, we highlighted three recent Multi-Site Due Diligence Investigation projects:

Cross Jurisdictional ESAs

ESAs and Building Conditions Assessments at 46 Sites in Ontario and Quebec

Multi-Property Designated Substances and Hazardous Materials Surveys

XCG Knows… How to Celebrate!

On February 2, 2020, XCG will turn 30! To celebrate, we will be inviting our expert people and valued clients to come together and celebrate three decades of helping solve environmental issues in Canada. Our mascot, XCGroundhog, will be watching for his shadow while preparing for the big party to be held in late spring or early summer (once the weather is a bit warmer and he comes out of hibernation).

To be added to the invitation list for our 30th Anniversary party, please call or email Trevor Mahoney at
